Can Veneers be an Alternative to Braces for Teeth Straightening?

Many individuals have heard about the use of veneers for covering stains and other flaws on the teeth. However, modern-day dentistry has allowed veneers to be used for other purposes, including teeth straightening. As surprising as it may be, dental veneers serve many purposes, with teeth straightening and evening being a popular choice. So, in short, yes, dental veneers can be used as a braces alternative, however, there are a few things to understand. Keep reading to find out more.

The use of veneers as a teeth straightening treatment

Having misaligned teeth is more than just a cosmetic problem. A crooked smile, misaligned bite or gaps between teeth can affect one’s ability to eat or speak properly and could make brushing and flossing difficult, which could increase the risk of oral health issues.

Dental veneers can work as an alternative to braces if the teeth are only slightly crooked or have small spaces between them. Veneers are thin shells placed over the front side of the teeth to transform their appearance. However, the cosmetic dental treatment cannot fix a misaligned bite or other orthodontic issues.

Two types of veneers are available. Porcelain veneers are custom-made and affixed to the teeth. Composite veneers are applied directly over the teeth, sometimes in a single dental visit. Porcelain veneers are usually more durable and last longer, but they cost more than composite veneers.

Before fitting the veneers, the dentist will need to reduce the size of the teeth. This means that people with thin tooth structures cannot get veneers and the teeth may become more sensitive to temperature and pressure after the procedure. The dentist will explain the potential risks during a consultation. Other factors to consider with teeth straightening options include:

Severity of malocclusion

Not all teeth straightening options work the same way. For complex or severe orthodontic misalignment, conventional metal braces may be the best choice since they are stronger, and the results are more predictable. However, if only minor correction is needed, then veneers might be on the table.

Preferred duration of treatment

Orthodontic treatment can last several months, depending on the treatment option and the desired results. While it is possible to complete some treatments in as little as six months, it can last for a year or two. Patients will also need to wear retainers for some time after treatment so that the teeth can adjust to their new positions.

By contrast, veneers can be completed in only a few dental appointments spanning a few weeks. However, veneers are not permanent and may need to be changed after some years if they get damaged or deteriorated.

Making a decision

Porcelain veneers are versatile and can correct more issues on the teeth than braces within a shorter period. Slight crookedness, chip, stains and gaps can be corrected with only one treatment. Also, braces can be uncomfortable and inconvenient because additional adjustment appointments are required throughout the process.
